Category: Mathematics / Description: The mathematics courses at CHS emphasizes the development of critical thinking and problem-solving techniques that are not specific to mathematics, and can be applied to real-world problems, including coursework in other subject areas. Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 courses have adopted the Reveal Math curriculum by McGraw Hill. The foundational structure of this program places an emphasis on rigor, productive struggle, formative assessment, rich tasks, mathematical discourse, and collaborative learning. All courses incorporate lessons designed to help students develop the literacy skills necessary to succeed in mathematics and effectively communicate their reasoning to others.

Course Number: C211 /Category: Mathematics /Credits: 2 /Recommended Grades: 9,10 /Level: College Prep /Length: Full Year / Description: The course uses the Reveal math curriculum to develop skills around collaboration, learning content through exploration, fluency of skills and deep conceptual understanding. Modules include expressions, one variable equations, functions, linear and nonlinear equations, linear inequalities, systems of equations, exponents and roots, exponential functions, polynomials, quadratics, and statistics. This course is designed to help students make the transition from concrete thinking to abstract thinking and develop problem-solving techniques that are relevant to all topics. Throughout this course, students will revisit core pre-algebra skills and concepts as they maneuver through Algebra 1 curriculum and standards.

Modules include functions, linear equations and inequalities, quadratics, polynomials, radical functions, exponential functions, logs, rational functions, and trig functions and identities. Graphing calculators are used extensively throughout the course. Algebra 1 and geometry are prerequisites for this course.

The added depth of understanding helps prepare students for advanced mathematics courses. The course uses the Reveal math curriculum to develop skills around collaboration, learning content through exploration, fluency of skills and deep conceptual understanding. Prerequisites: teacher recommendation.

Course Number: C250 /Category: Mathematics /Credits: 2 /Recommended Grades: 11,12 /Level: AP /Length: Full Year /Description: This course is a college-level Calculus course. Course topics include functions and limits, differentiation, applications of differentiation, integration, applications of the definite integral, and techniques of integration. Graphing calculators will be used extensively throughout the class. Students are expected to take the National AP Calculus AB examination in May. Students are required to complete a summer assignment preceding the course. Prerequisites: A high level of success (a grade of B or better) in Algebra 2 Honors OR Pre-Calculus and a teacher recommendation.

Course Number: C279 /Category: Mathematics /Credits: 2 /Recommended Grades: 11,12 /Level: AP /Length: Full Year /Description: ‘Statistics provides tools for describing variability in data and for making informed decisions that take it into account.’ (Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, 2011) This course is designed to give students the tools to describe variability as well as explore methods and concepts related to comparing statistics and making inferences. Students interpret categorical and quantitative data, justify their conclusions verbally, and evaluate random processes underlying statistical experiments. They study independence and conditional probability and use these principles to interpret data; use the rules of probability to compute probabilities of compound events in a uniform probability model; and use probability to make decisions. Students are expected to take the national AP Statistics examination in May. Students are required to complete a summer assignment preceding the course. Prerequisite: A grade of B or above in Algebra 2 or another higher-level mathematics course and a teacher recommendation. Non-seniors who take this course are strongly encouraged to take a second math course concurrently.

Course Number: C239a /Category: Mathematics /Credits: 1 /Recommended Grades: 11,12 /Level: Early College /Length: Semester /Description: Statistics provides tools for describing variability in data and for making informed decisions that take it into account.’ (Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, 2011) This course is designed to give students the tools to describe variability as well as explore methods and concepts related to comparing statistics and making inferences. Topics include being able to summarize and analyze data distributions both numerically and graphically. Evaluating linear equations while understanding the concepts of slope, intercepts, inequalities, correlation and regression will be discussed. The concept of probability and probability distributions will be introduced for both discrete and continuous variables. In order to satisfy requirements for earning a math credit, you must continue on into “Statistics” during the subsequent semester. If you pass this class, you will be able to earn college credit at Bunker Hill Community College. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and a teacher recommendation.

Course Number: C202Category: Mathematics /Credits: 1 /Recommended Grades: 11,12 /Level: College Prep /Length: Semester /Description: Consumer Math is a course that is designed to use higher level math from Algebra 2, Statistics, Probability, Precalculus, and Calculus to apply to important, applicable skills that many adults use. The course addresses college preparatory mathematics topics from under eight financial umbrellas: Discretionary Expenses, Banking, Investing, Credit, Employment and Income Taxes, Automobile Ownership, Independent Living, and Retirement Planning and Household Budgeting. The course allows students to experience the interrelatedness of mathematical topics, find patterns, make conjectures, and extrapolate from known situations to unknown situations. The mathematics topics contained in this course are introduced, developed, and applied in an as-needed format in the financial settings covered. Students are encouraged to use a variety of problem-solving skills and strategies in real-world contexts, and to question outcomes using mathematical analysis and data to support their findings. The course offers students multiple opportunities to use, construct, question, model, and interpret financial situations through symbolic algebraic representations, graphical representations, geometric representations, and verbal representations. It provides students a motivating, young-adult centered financial context for understanding and applying the mathematics they are guaranteed to use in the future.

Course Number: CDBH-CIT-130 /Category: Mathematics /Credits: 1 /Recommended Grades: 11,12 /Level: CP /Length: Semester /Description: This is an elective math course part of the Data pathway. This course in data visualization will teach students an essential skill needed in the business world. Students will learn the foundations of data visualization which uses statistics, computer science, neuroscience and psychology to visually present data. The techniques and skills learned in this course will help students’ articulate and present clear evidence of findings in a meaningful and aesthetically pleasing way. This course is geared towards data analytics, but is also open to students in other disciplines looking for a better understanding of data visualization. Students will use the software Tableau, along with theory which explains how the visual processing works, and techniques which take advantage of the brain’s processing to create effective visualizations. Students will learn how to choose the correct visualization for their data and differentiate between both good and bad data visualizations. By the end of the course, students will be able to create effective visualizations, dashboards and tell a story with data with Tableau.

Course Number: C201 /Category: Mathematics /Credits: 1 /Recommended Grades: 9,10,11,12 /Level: College Prep /Length: Semester /Description: The goal of the Financial Literacy course is to teach students about basic finance concepts and how to use these concepts to make wise financial decisions and promote financial well-being over their lifetime. Students study topics such as modern banking, budgeting, income and employment, consumer skills, credit and debit, insurance, investment, renting versus buying property, fraud protection, financing higher education and entrepreneurship, as well developing digital skills like Google Suite. Throughout the course, students will navigate through an online learning platform Junior Achievement (JA) which includes interactive lessons, real-world scenarios, self-reflection activities, teacher generated assessments, final exam, and an entrepreneurial based performance task. JA offers supplemental teaching materials to be used at the teachers discretion to best meet the needs of all students.

Course Number: C240 /Category: Mathematics /Credits: 2 /Recommended Grades: 11,12 /Level: College Prep /Length: Full Year /Description: This course combines the trigonometric, geometric, and algebraic techniques needed to prepare for the study of calculus and strengthens students’ conceptual understanding of problems and mathematical reasoning in solving problems. Topics include the complex number system, vector and matrix quantities, polynomial and rational expressions and equations, interpreting and building functions, trigonometric functions, right triangle geometry and conic sections. Ability with these topics is especially important for students intending to study calculus, physics, and other sciences, and/or engineering in college.

Course Number: C239bCategory: Mathematics /Credits: 1 /Recommended Grades: 11,12 /Level: CP /Length: Semester / Description: This course is a continuation of BHCC Pre-Statistics. This course covers statistical concepts and methods. Topics include data organization, averages and variation; elementary probability; binomial, normal, and t-distributions; estimation and hypothesis testing; and linear correlation and regression. The course meets the General Education requirement for Quantitative Problem Solving. Prerequisite: Passing grade in BHCC Pre-Statistics.

Course Number: C280M / Category: Mathematics / Credits: 1 / Recommended Grades: 11, 12 / Level: College Prep / Length: Semester / Description: All students who wish to graduate high school are required to take and pass the Math MCAS exam. This course is designed for students on an EPP (Educational Proficiency Plan) who are required to take and pass a mathematics course during their junior or senior year. This course is for those students who need an alternative to fill the EPP requirement for graduation. Students on an EPP will need to pass the course as a graduation requirement. This course is also for those who have failed the Math MCAS and wish to earn their diploma. The course will cover topics that prepare students for an end of course proficiency exam and/or to pass the Math MCAS. The exam will address the high school mathematics content in the Massachusetts Frameworks. Topics addressed will come from the following conceptual categories: Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Modeling, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.  Prerequisite Courses: Algebra 1 and Geometry.
