Google Troubleshooting

Have a student that can’t log into his/her Google account? Run into a suspended account? Diego Reyes or Norma Torres, can help you with this. The good news is that Chromebooks have built-in accessibility settings to help students in appropriate-use cases. The bad news is that these settings are annoying if turned on for users who do not need them. Turn on/off accessibility features Sign in to your Chromebook. Click the status area, where your account picture appears. Select Settings. Click Show advanced settings at the bottom of the page. In the “Accessibility” section, select/deselect the boxes next to: Make the cursor bigger (so it’s more visible on the screen) Turn on high contrast mode (makes the screen easier to read) Turn on spoken feedback (describes what is happening on the screen) Turn on sticky keys (allows shortcut keys to be typed in sequence, without pressing modifier keys at the same time) Turn on the screen magnifier (enlarges items on the screen) Automatically click when the cursor stops (click without using your mouse) Turn on the on-screen keyboard (shows a keyboard that can be clicked with a mouse) After you’ve turned on accessibility features, you can adjust them from your keyboard: To turn spoken feedback on or off, press Ctrl + Alt + Z. To magnify the screen, press Ctrl + Alt + Brightness up or Brightness down (or use Ctrl + Alt + two fingers scrolling up or down on the trackpad). To pan the view around, move your cursor past the edge of the screen.

Google usernames are the same as the info in the CPS Login ID column of Aspen. You can see this information for students by logging into Aspen, going to the Students tab, making sure your fieldset is on Default and then looking for the info in the CPS Login ID. See below:  

If the screengrab functionality does not seem to be working on a Chromebook, check to make sure the “Treat top-row keys as function keys” option is switched OFF. You can also toggle this functionality by holding down the Search key, but it’s probably easier to check in the settings under Device and Keyboard.

Chromebooks should update themselves automatically, but a few issues unfortunately can slow down this process. You can check and update Chromebooks to the most recent operating system version using the following steps. Also note that you can have students trigger the update check at the beginning of class and the update will run in the background. In addition to keeping Chromebooks secure, ensuring that they are up-to-date often improves performance and integration with Google services and Applications.
